A Love Letter to Rabun County
Rabun County has always had a hold on me. Even as a little girl, I was drawn to the winding roads that snake through the mountains like old stories—familiar and full of wonder. I still remember sitting in the backseat, watching the evergreens change shades in the thick fog, only to reappear moments later like some kind of quiet magic trick. It’s a beauty that doesn’t need explaining—it just is.
This land has shaped so much of who I am, and it’s a big reason why we started Haggard Hiker in the first place. Our gear, our mission, our way of life—it all stems from a deep-rooted love for the wilderness. Everything we carry is handpicked or repurposed with intention, inspired by places just like this.
Rabun County offers some of the best public land in the state. Whether you're hiking, paddling, camping, or just breathing deep in the middle of nowhere—there’s something for every kind of explorer. But please, as always, respect the land. Stay on marked trails, pack out what you pack in, and remember what good ol’ Smokey the Bear says: Only you can prevent wildfires. Let’s keep this place wild for the next adventurer.
After a day in the woods, I always recommend heading into downtown Clayton. It's the kind of small town that makes you want to slow down a little. Stop in at Reeves for something classic, grab a bite (and maybe a beer) at Universal Joint, sip on something special at White Birch Provisions, or explore the curated gems at Wander North Georgia. These are just a few of our favorites, but the whole downtown strip is full of charm and hardworking folks who love this place as much as we do.
Clayton has grown a lot since I was a kid—some of it good, some of it... not so much. But no matter how it changes, the heart of this place remains: vast, vibrant, and full of quiet beauty.
Next time you’re passing through or planning your next outdoor adventure, make sure to spend a little time here. Rabun County is more than just a destination—it’s a feeling. And once it gets ahold of you, it never really lets go.
See you on the trail,
Katie
